The narrative begins when veteran elephant hunter Allan Quatermain meets Sir Henry Curtis and Captain John Good on a passenger ship sailing to Natal. Curtis is searching for his younger brother, who vanished two years prior while seeking the fabled Diamond Mines of King Solomon, located behind the inaccessible peaks of the Suliman mountains known as Sheba’s Breasts. Moved by the appeal, Quatermain joins the quest, possessing an authentic map drawn in blood by a dying Portuguese explorer named José da Silvestra three hundred years ago. Accompanied by a mysterious native named Umbopa—who is secretly the rightful king in exile—the party crosses a vast, waterless desert, suffers extreme hardships, and climbs the freezing mountain slopes, discovering the frozen corpse of the original map-maker in a lonely cave.

Crossing over the snowline, they descend into the fertile, isolated realm of Kukuanaland, an idyllic country ruled by the tyrannical and bloodthirsty one-eyed usurper Twala. Upon arrival, the travellers are captured by royal warriors and only escape execution by staging a terrifying display of superior magic—predicting and bringing about a total solar eclipse that darkens the moon in the height of its glory. This marvel secures the allegiance of the oppressed people and the chief captains, who rally behind Umbopa as their true sovereign.

As civil war erupts, the narrative builds toward a massive military confrontation on the tablelands above the capital city of Loo. The heroic Kukuana regiment known as the Greys holds the pass in a desperate, suicidal stand, allowing the rebel forces to outflank the royalist army. In the final conflict, Sir Henry Curtis engages King Twala in a brutal, hand-to-hand battle of champions with their battle-axes, ultimately defeating the tyrant and securing the throne for the rightful heir.

With Twala overthrown and peace restored, the victorious party descends into the ominous subterranean chambers of the Three Witches to seek the legendary treasure. Instead of finding endless wealth, they are trapped in the diamond-filled treasury by the treacherous old witch-finder Gagool, who perishes in the attempt. Quatermain and his companions narrowly escape the collapsing caverns, carrying away enough precious stones to make them fabulously wealthy, and though Sir Henry fails to find his missing brother on the throne, they return through the desert to civilization transformed by their unbelievable trials.
