The narrative follows Emil Sinclair from his earliest childhood, where he first becomes conscious of the two opposing realms that divide human existence: the bright, moral world of home and the dark, dangerous underworld of the streets. Tormented and blackmailed by an older schoolboy named Frank Kromer, Sinclair experiences his first profound fall from grace and discovers the bitter reality of guilt. His salvation comes in the shape of Max Demian, a mature, enigmatic fellow student whose unconventional ideas—such as a reinterpretation of the biblical story of Cain as a mark of distinction rather than shame—shatter Sinclair's naive worldview and force him to question traditional morality.
As Sinclair grows older, he undergoes cycles of spiritual and moral rebellion, descending into dissipation and heavy drinking as a way to protest the conventionality of society. Yet, even amidst his debauchery, he remains intensely chaste and tormented by a deep, idealized longing for purity, which he temporarily projects onto a vision he names Beatrice. Seeking a deeper truth, he eventually meets the organist Pistorius, who introduces him to the ancient deity Abraxas—a god who unites both the divine and the diabolical. Through these intense philosophical explorations, Sinclair learns that his true vocation is not to follow external rules or ideals, but rather to bravely seek his own path of self-realization, embracing every aspect of his inner nature without fear.
The climax of Sinclair's journey leads him to the mysterious Mother Eve, Demian's mother, who embodies both the maternal warmth and the passionate allure of his dreams. He enters into a spiritual community of seekers who recognize that the old order of the world is decaying and that a great, transformative upheaval is approaching. When the First World War finally breaks out, Sinclair and Demian both answer the call of destiny and enlist. Reunited briefly in a field hospital after being wounded, Demian imparts a final, gentle lesson of inner guidance and leaves Sinclair with a lingering kiss from Mother Eve, signifying that Sinclair has finally found his true self and can now look inward for his guide and friend.
