С момента выхода в свет первого издания этого труда произошли поразительные и прискорбные события. Великое «антирабовладельческое» заблуждение, зародившееся среди европейских монархистов более пятидесяти лет назад, привело к расколу страны и гражданской войне, как всегда и предсказывали его авторы. Партия, глубоко проникнутая ложными теориями и нелепыми допущениями британских писателей и аболиционистских обществ, находится у власти в Федеральном правительстве, которое она обязалась использовать для претворения своих допущений на практике. Она утверждает, что негр, за исключением цвета кожи, — это человек, подобный им самим, и по праву природы заслуживающий такой же свободы; что лишать его этой свободы означает порабощать его; что, следовательно, южное общество порочно и должно быть подвергнуто революционным преобразованиям, и она заявляет, что ее миссия заключается в достижении этого — в установлении политики, которая в конечном итоге упразднит или разрушит верховенство белого человека и обеспечит «беспристрастную свободу» для негров! Таково положение дел между регионами. Если бы «антирабовладельческая» партия опиралась на истину — если бы негр, за исключением цвета кожи, был человеком, подобным нам самим, — если бы социальное подчинение этого негра было несправедливостью, а четыре миллиона этих людей на Юге имели право на ту же свободу, что и мы, — и если бы люди, создавшие это правительство, замыслили включить в него низшие расы этого континента, и было бы поистине благотворно уравнять в правах и сблизиться в братском союзе с этими неграми, то, хотя и можно сомневаться в том, было ли целесообразно использовать общее правительство для достижения этого, преследуемая цель была бы столь благотворна и являла бы собой столь трансцендентный акт справедливости по отношению к этим предполагаемым рабам, что все честные, искренние и патриотично настроенные граждане должны были бы незамедлительно поддержать партию, которая ныне стремится осуществить это. В заключение автор считает необходимым отметить, что простое литературное мастерство или изящный слог являются для него второстепенными соображениями.
