Driven by a desire for martial glory, Lemminkainen journeys to Northland, where he faces the hostile wizards of Pohyola and is ultimately slain and dismembered in the dark river of Tuoni.

Learning of her son's death through a bleeding talisman, Lemminkainen's devoted mother travels to the death-realm, recovers his remains, and uses divine healing balms to restore him to life. The narrative then shifts back to Wainamoinen, who builds a magical boat and undertakes perilous journeys, including a descent into the belly of the giant bard Wipunen to retrieve the lost words of master-magic.
