Автор, священник-миссионер, после более чем двадцати лет трудов в Австралии был вынужден по состоянию здоровья посетить Европу; и в течение прошедшего сезона воспользовался возможностью совершить поездку по Шотландии. Его целью при посещении этой исторической земли было, во-первых, порадовать своих шотландских друзей и обращенных в Австралии пребыванием, пусть и кратким, в стране и в некоторых ее особых местах, которые, как он знал, были им очень дороги; а во-вторых, удовлетворить собственное желание увидеть успехи религии как там, так и в других частях Британских островов, которые он уже посетил. Случилось так, однако, что по прибытии в Эдинбург он обнаружил старого и очень дорогого друга и товарища по колледжу, заведующего самым густонаселенным католическим приходом столицы, и из уважения к настоятельным просьбам этого друга он отступил от своего решения и прочитал за те несколько дней, что длилось его пребывание: во-первых, лекцию о тайных обществах в пользу крупной и процветающей католической ассоциации для мужчин; и во-вторых, в качестве продолжения к ней, лекцию об экспроприации Пропаганды.
