Несколько лет назад автору этих строк, направлявшемуся на так называемую генеральную конгрегацию Общества Иисуса, попутчик на трансатлантическом лайнере задал вопрос, знает ли он что-нибудь о иезуитах. Получив утвердительный ответ, автор принялся рассказывать о характере и целях ордена. Через несколько мгновений его прервал собеседник: «Вы ровным счетом ничего о них не знаете, сэр; доброго дня». Возможно, сами иезуиты несут ответственность за подобный склад ума, который свойственен не только людям в море, но встречается повсеместно.
На самом деле, ни один иезуит до сих пор не написал полной или адекватной истории Общества; Орландини, Жуванси и Кордара предприняли такую попытку пару столетий назад, но их труд не вышел за рамки первых ста лет.
