ГЛАВА I МОНТЕВИДЕО
В своей предыдущей книге «Путешествия по Южной Америке» я сделал следующее заявление относительно произношения слова «Монтевидео»: «Многие иностранцы совершают ошибку, произнося название этого города с ударением на предпоследнюю букву „е“. Каждый слог должен произноситься одинаково, без выделения какого-либо слога ударением». Впоследствии я понял, что заблуждался, и убедился в этом, проиграв джентльмену спор на десять долларов по поводу произношения уругвайской столицы. В слове «Монтевидео» ударение падает на предпоследний слог. Это слово происходит от латинского «Montem video», причем конечная буква m в слове montem была опущена для облегчения произношения. Монтевидео иногда называют «Королевой Ла-Платы» из-за его чистоты, надменной сдержанности и аристократического вида; еще чаще его называют «Современной Троей» из-за десятилетий междоусобных распрей, анархии, революций и Десятилетней войны. Теперь, когда на протяжении нескольких лет царит затишье с перспективами прочного мира, несправедливо по отношению к его жителям уподоблять его доисторическому городу на юго-восточном конце Геллеспонта.
Несколько раз в течение 1915 и 1916 годов я посещал Монтевидео, совершая периодические поездки из Буэнос-Айреса, но один эпизод, связанный с моим последним прибытием на уругвайский берег, потребует бесконечно много времени, чтобы стереться из моей памяти. Дело было так:
