ВВЕДЕНИЕ.

Труд, впервые переиздаваемый здесь по оригинальному изданию Кекстона, сохранился в трех экземплярах. Один из них находится в библиотеке Рипонского собора, другой — в библиотеке Спенсера, ныне в Манчестере, а третий — в Бамборо-Кастле. Небольшой фрагмент, состоящий из стр. 17–18 и 27–28, хранится в Бодлианской библиотеке. Текст настоящего издания взят из экземпляра Рипона. У меня не было возможности увидеть его лично; но машинописную копию мне предоставил мистер Джон Уитэм, клерк капитула Рипонского собора, а корректуру сверяли с рипонским экземпляром преподобный доктор Фаулер, вице-приректор Зала епископа Хатфилда в Дареме, который любезно перепроверил каждый пассаж, в котором я подозревал возможную неточность. Предыдущие библиографы давали книге совершенно неподходящее название «Наставления для путешественников». Оригинальный труд содержит столько упоминаний о городе Брюгге, что невозможно сомневаться в том, что он был составлен именно там. Сама рукопись, использованная Кекстоном, должна была быть написана не позднее второго десятилетия XV века; если только она не являлась неизмененным списком с более старой рукописи. Но подавляющую часть материала, присущего именно кекстоновской форме диалогов, можно с уверенностью приписать оригиналу из-за частого появления мест, где при совершенно правильном французском английский перевод обнаруживает несовершенное понимание смысла.

Одно из самых примечательных различий между формой диалогов Кекстона и той, что сохранилась в парижской рукописи, заключается в перестановке нескольких разделов в той части труда, к которой наиболее уместно название «Le Livre des Mestiers» (стр. 24–44 издания Кекстона). В обеих версиях разделы в этой части расположены в алфавитном порядке христианских имен упоминаемых лиц; но имена, связанные с определенными занятиями, в двух версиях не всегда совпадают. Так, у Мишелана лучник зовется Фильберт, у Кекстона — Гильберт; у Мишелана плотник — Анри, у Кекстона — Ламберт; у Мишелана кровельщик — Мартин, у Кекстона — Ламфруй; и так далее. Получившиеся перестановки затрудняют на первый взгляд восприятие существенного тождества материала в обеих книгах. Если бы издатель пожелал напечатать текст Кекстона и парижской рукописи в параллельных колонках, ему пришлось бы прибегнуть к остроумному приему, использованному профессором Скитом в издании Оксфордского университета для трех редакций «Видения о Петре Пахаре», то есть все разделы, в которых имена были изменены, пришлось бы приводить дважды в каждой колонке — крупным шрифтом там, где они встречаются на своем алфавитном месте, и мелким шрифтом напротив соответствующих разделов в другом тексте. Трудно понять, почему лицо, создавшее более позднюю версию, за которой последовал Кекстон, утруждало себя изменением имен и перестановкой материала в новом алфавитном порядке. Можно почти заподозрить, что эти имена принадлежали реальным торговцам из Брюгге, и изменения отражают перемены, произошедшие между более ранним и более поздним изданиями книги.

Французский язык парижской рукописи представляет собой пикардийский диалект первой половины XIV века. Французский язык книги Кекстона сохраняет многие первоначальные северо-восточные формы, но в значительной степени модернизирован и уподоблен литературному языку более позднего периода. Такие «этимологические» написания, как recepueur, debuoit, обычны в тексте Кекстона, но редко встречаются у Мишелана. В настоящем издании текст Кекстона воспроизведен буквально, за исключением того, что исправлены очевидные опечатки (оригинальные чтения приведены в маргинальных примечаниях 2) и для удобопонятости добавлена современная пунктуация. Там, где Кекстон оставляет место для иллюминированной инициальной буквы (в середине напечатана маленькая буква, служащая ориентиром), я использовал крупную заглавную букву. Список английских слов в конце призван содержать все слова, требующие каких-либо пояснений или заслуживающие внимания по какой-либо причине. Список французских слов, который я не смог подготовить из-за плохого самочувствия, был составлен мистером Генри Литтлхейлсом.
