Общее количество зарегистрированных здесь священников составляет 3795. Их конфессия указана в 2556 случаях; неизвестна в 1239.

В объяснение различающегося типографского оформления дат, имен и т. д. и дефектов пагинации можно сказать, что более старые части книги, охватывающие случаи, имевшие место до 1899 года, оставлены в прежнем виде, за исключением того, что периодические комментарии и резюме, сопровождавшие новые издания, были устранены, а доступный материал перенесен в общее введение к тому. Случаи, произошедшие после завершения списка в прежнем стиле составления, были переупорядочены и перенабраны в виде единого алфавитного списка. Таким образом, книга содержит шесть алфавитных списков, начинающихся в первой части со страницы 10 (ок. 1875–81 гг.); стр. 50 (до 1883 г.); стр. 102 (до 1893 г.); стр. 125 (до 1895 г.); стр. 140 (до 1898 г.); стр. 139, Часть II (до 1914 г.). ПРЕДИСЛОВИЕ К РАННИМ ИЗДАНИЯМ.

До тех пор пока воображение создает бога для управления судьбами людей; до тех пор пока невежество можно заставить верить в то, что проповедник или священник является в том или ином качестве посредником или агентом между людьми и силами в облаках — что он “небесный лоцман”, прямо уполномоченный божеством ведаиь делами Бога на земле, и что личность и сан священника священны, — до тех пор будет возможно существование такой профессии, как современное духовенство.

И если эти проповедники в массе своей столь же преступны, как и любой другой класс; если они аморальны без оправдания нуждой или невежеством — без иной причины, кроме их зачастую праздной жизни и возможностей, предоставляемых им характером их призвания, — то их последователи не могут узнать этот факт слишком рано.

Первое издание этой книги было напечатано в 1881 году, с тех пор многие тысячи экземпляров разошлись по всей стране; но ни в одном случае, насколько нам известно, никто не смог успешно опровергнуть факты, выдвинутые против любого «человека божьего», фигурирующего на этих страницах. Таким образом, гарантируется ее существенная точность. Единственное обвинение, которое может быть предъявлено ей, — это ее неполнота. Издатели не претендуют на то, чтобы обнаружить более чем небольшой процент клирикального мошенничества. Во всех крупных городах страны католическая церковь обладает большим и опасным политическим влиянием, и ее священники имеют все шансы избежать возмездия за свои пороки и преступления. Судьи — католики или обязаны своими постами католической власти; судебные чиновники — католики; полицейские — католики. Все они выгораживают «отцов» и утаивают их имена от публикации.

Кроме того, редактору невозможно прочитать все газеты и собрать все случаи, которые действительно видят свет гласности. И, к нашему сожалению, некоторые светские газеты замалчивают эти новости. Если тщательно прочесать всю страну, есть все основания полагать, что можно было бы обнаружить в сто раз больше преступлений, справедливо приписанных людям, которые выдают себя за учителей морали. Поэтому для использования в будущих изданиях мы настоятельно призываем всех, кто читает эти страницы, присылать нам те отчеты о подобных делах, которые попадаются им на глаза, сообщая факты, даты и места, а если присылаются газетные вырезки — указывать название, дату и место издания газеты.

Апологетами принятой в этой стране системы религии выдвигалось возражение, будто проступки духовенства ничего не доказывают против самой системы. В этом они заблуждаются. Разумеется, если бы христианство имело под собой фактическое основание, эти записи не доказали бы отсутствие такого основания. Однако то, что они действительно доказывают, заключается в том, что утверждение о христианстве, будто оно делает людей нравственными, неверно. Ибо если система неспособна удержать самих своих учителей, то как мы можем ожидать, что их ученики извлекут из нее пользу? Суть, на которой делает акцент эта книга, как выразительно формумулирует бывший методистский пастор, ныне рационалист, но всегда нравственный человек, заключается в том, что религия сама по себе не является моральной силой; что она не едина с моралью; что она может существовать и часто существует без морали, и что мораль ничего не выигрывает от связи с ней.

Считается, что пропорционально своей численности больше священников, чем представителей любой другой профессии, виновны в преступлениях и пороках. Значительная часть преступлений направлена против женщин или совершена с участием женщин. Это, пожалуй, неудивительно, если учесть институт пастырских визитов. Пока мужчины находятся вне дома, выполняя свои жизненные обязанности, священник разгуливает вокруг, якобы заботясь о благополучии своей паствы, а на самом деле нанося визиты женщинам, которые привлекают его больше всего. Чем является конфессионал для римско-католической церкви, тем является «пастырский визит» для церкви протестантской. Другой институт церкви также можно было бы упразднить к выгоде нравственности — а именно, одиночные кельи-кабинеты для священника, пристроенные к церквям. Эти меблированные комнаты становятся местами множества оргий. Вместе с ними должны исчезнуть и боковые двери или входы на хоры. Боковая дверь и кабинет церкви в Сан-Франциско использовались для интимных свиданий, которые завершились убийством. Убитая женщина была найдена у исповедальни католической церкви в городе Нью-Йорк. В Омахе священник был найден в пасторской комнате собственной церкви задохнувшимся в тесных объятиях с женщиной-миссионеркой. Эти боковые двери, уединенные «кабинеты» и тайные исповедальни опасны для добродетели, если не для жизни. Множество женщин и девушек проходят через них к своему падению.

В этой краткой истории поведения духовенства не всегда удается избежать неполноты идентификации, поскольку в отчетах об этих процессах в светских изданиях вошло в привычку опускать имена ответчиков, и многие благочестивые негодяи значатся как «преп. мистер Смит» или «преп. мистер Джонс». В некоторых случаях место совершения преступления указано не полностью. Опять же, в определенных случаях проступок получает лаконичное название, примененное судившим преступника церковным судом, такое как «аморальное поведение», «распутное поведение» и т. д. — определения, которые скрывают грубость преступления и тем самым выгораживают преподобного виновника в интересах церкви и духовенства.
