ГЛАВА I. ВВЕДЕНИЕ.
ОПРЕДЕЛЕНИЯ ПОНЯТИЙ «КУЛЬТ» И «СИУАН».
§ 1. Культ, в контексте данной статьи, означает систему религиозных верований и поклонения, в особенности обряды и церемонии, используемые при таком поклонении. В настоящей статье рассматриваются культы нескольких племен сиуан — то есть, за двумя исключениями, тех племен, которые посетил автор.
«Сиуан» — термин, введенный Бюро этнологии. Он происходит от слова «сиу» — общепринятого наименования индейцев, которые называют себя «дакота» или «лакота», причем последнее является самоназванием тетонов. Термин «сиуан» используется в качестве прилагательного, но, в отличие от своего первоисточника, относится не только к племенам дакота, но и ко всей лингвистической общности, или языковой семье.
СЕМЬЯ СИУАН.
К семье сиуан относятся дакота, ассинибойны, омаха, понка, осейджи, канза, квапа, айова, ото, миссури, виннебаго, мандан, хидатса, кроу, тутэло, билокси, катавба и другие индейцы. Сапона, которые в настоящее время вымерли, вероятно, принадлежали к этой семье.
Автор был миссионером у индейцев понка на территории, которая ныне является частью штата Небраска, с 1871 по 1873 год. С 1878 года он собирал тексты на местных языках и другие сведения у омаха, понка, осейджов, канза, виннебаго, айова, ото, миссури и дакота.
При сборе сведений относительно древних верований индейцев автор всегда считал целесообразным расспрашивать индейца в отсутствие переводчика.
ИСТОЧНИКИ.
§ 2. Настоящее исследование основано главным образом на высказываниях индейцев, хотя при подготовке пятой и шестой глав был также использован ряд печатных публикаций.
Следующие индейцы приняли христианство еще до встречи с автором: Джозеф Ла Флєш, Фрэнк Ла Флєш, Джон Биг Элк и Джордж Миллер — все они принадлежали к племени омаха. Джозеф Ла Флєш, умерший в 1888 году, после 1855 года был лидером партии цивилизации в племени омаха. В свое время он был верховным вождем. Он говорил на нескольких индейских языках, поскольку провел годы среди других племен, включая пауни, когда состоял на службе в меховой компании. Его сын Фрэнк работает в Бюро по делам индейцев в Вашингтоне с 1881 года. Автор получил значительный лингвистический материал от отца и сына. Следующие индейцы не были христианами: Гахиге, Два Ворона, Дацинь-нанпажи и Самуэль Фримонт — все омаха; Нудань-акса — понка; а также информаторы из числа канза, осейджов, миссури, айова и виннебаго.
Два Ворона был различным образом связан с древними институтами своего народа. Он был старейшиной, или никагахи, и тем самым являлся членом по должности того сословия, которое выполняло гражданские и религиозные функции в государстве. Он исполнял обязанности полицейского во время охоты на бизонов. Он выступал в роли капитана, или военного вождя, и является ведущим лекарем в ордене шаманов Бизона, а также хранителем «сладкого лекарства».
Дацинь-нанпажи, или Тот-кто-не-боится-видя-пауни, является членом мелкого рода Черного Медведя, а также одним из слуг рода Элка; в его обязанности входит присутствие в священном вигваме этого рода и оказание помощи в обрядах, связанных с призывом Существ Грома.
Гахиге был вождем Инке-сабе — рода Бизона, а ко времени своей смерти он являлся хранителем двух священных трубок.
Самуэль Фримонт является членом мелкого рода Орла. Он прибыл в Вашингтон осенью 1888 года и помогал автору до февраля 1889 года.
Нудань-акса — вождь части рода Существа-Грома у понка. Автор знаком с ним с 1871 года.
Имена остальных индейских информаторов можно не упоминать, так как их показания в целом совпадают.
