Severin recounts his time at a Carpathian health resort, where he became infatuated with a marble statue of Venus. His obsessive worship manifests physically when he meets Wanda von Dunajew, a wealthy and beautiful young widow who embodies his pagan ideal of serene sensuousness. Drawn into an intense intellectual and emotional affair, Severin begs Wanda to become his wife while simultaneously offering himself unconditionally as her slave, convinced that love requires a strict dichotomy of hammer and anvil.
As their relationship deepens, Wanda initially resists his morbid fantasies but gradually grows into the role of a cruel tyrant, stimulated by Severin's persistent demands for subjugation. They travel to Florence together, where Wanda formally binds him to an agreement of absolute servitude, humiliating him publicly while exploring the limits of her power. Despite her coldness and eventual romantic interest in a striking Greek stranger named Alexis Papadopolis, Severin remains hopelessly enthralled by her charismatic cruelty.
The dynamic shifts drastically when Wanda encounters Papadopolis, a man whose raw, unapologetic masculinity immediately eclipses Severin's intellectual devotion. Although Wanda briefly attempts to reconcile with Severin, she ultimately embraces Papadopolis as her true master. Years later, Severin receives a letter and a portrait from Wanda in Paris, revealing the tragic death of Papadopolis and reflecting on their past.
