The surface of the island continent is protected by a deadly zone of specialised vegetation where air-sustaining properties fail, keeping the world isolated. Beneath the surface live the 'Dwellers,' an advanced subterranean race, while in rocky coastal lagoons dwell the amphibious Amphibians, who maintain a fragile treaty with the Dwellers.

The plot thickens as one of the Amphibians, an adventurous female explorer, remains on the surface too long and is captured by the 'Killers'—repulsive, worm-pink troglodytes who herd and consume creatures in brutal sacrificial feasts. The protagonist joins an Amphibian rescue party that mounts a covert expedition into the Killers' mountain stronghold. Travelling through subterranean tunnels and enduring extreme hardships, the protagonist relies on his axe, his wits, and the telepathic guidance and vitality-sharing of his Amphibian companion.

Inside the stronghold, the rescue mission unfolds through a series of tactical maneuvers and strange philosophical clashes. The protagonist penetrates the arsenal, battles the grotesque Killers using a massive archer's bow and cunning improvisation, and inadvertently triggers a catastrophic fire that consumes the settlement.
