The narrative begins with Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana entering the vast Dandaka forest, where they are welcomed by various ascetics seeking protection from malevolent Rākshasas. Rama pledges to defend the sages, setting off a chain of confrontations with fierce beings that populate the wilderness.

Soon, the forest trials intensify when the demon Virādha intercepts the trio and attempts to carry Sita away. The brothers defeat Virādha, burying him in a pit where he attains celestial release and directs them toward further wise sages in the region.

Journeying deeper, the princes visit the hermitages of Sarabhanga and Sutikshna, eventually meeting the great sage Agastya. Agastya gifts Rama a celestial bow and divine weapons forged by Vishwakarma, preparing him for the trials ahead and advising him to settle in the picturesque Panchavati.

In Panchavati, Lakshmana constructs a dwelling where the trio lives peacefully until Surpanakhā, a Rākshasi and Ravana's sister, approaches them. After she attempts to kill Sita, Lakshmana disfigures her, prompting her to flee to her brother Khara for vengeance.

Khara dispatches fourteen thousand warriors against the brothers, but Rama single-handedly slaughters them all in a fierce battle. Following this defeat, Khara, Dushana, and Triçira personally lead an assault, which ends in their utter destruction by Rama's divine arrows.

Enraged by these losses and enticed by descriptions of Sita's beauty, Akampana and Surpanakhā persuade Ravana to seek revenge through abduction. Ravana enlists the reluctant demon Māricha to take the form of a golden deer to lure the princes away.

While Rama pursues the illusive deer, Māricha is slain, but not before mimicking Rama's voice to cry out for help. Tricked by this cry, Sita persuades a reluctant Lakshmana to leave her unguarded in the hermitage.

Taking advantage of her solitude, Ravana appears as a mendicant, reveals his true form, and forcibly carries Sita away through the sky. The noble vulture Jatāyu intercepts them and fights valiantly, but his wings are severed and he falls mortally wounded.

Finally, Ravana imprisons Sita in the Asoka grove in Lanka under the guard of fierce Rākshasis. Meanwhile, Rama and Lakshmana return to find the hermitage empty, beginning a desperate search that leads them to the dying Jatāyu, who reveals the identity of the abductor.
