The story begins when an ambitious but unsuccessful salesman named Albert Weener answers an advertisement in Los Angeles placed by Josephine Spencer Francis. She has invented the Metamorphizer, a chemical compound that alters the basic structure of the grass family, allowing plants to absorb rocks and sand for nourishment instead of traditional fertilizers. Despite her grand vision of ending world famine and agricultural struggles, Weener immediately sees a commercial angle and convinces her to let him market it as a lawn tonic. Against her original wishes, Weener applies the substance to a neglected, yellow yard in a residential neighborhood, and the results are both miraculous and terrifying.
Overnight, the treated grass transforms into a lush, brilliantly green expanse, but it also begins growing at an uncontrollable, monstrous rate. The local homeowners, led by a formidable neighbor, quickly find that ordinary lawnmowers are completely useless against the thick, rubbery stems. As Weener and the eccentric inventor grapple with the reality of their creation, the grass refuses to stop growing, consuming driveways, swallowing houses, and threatening the entire region.
Desperate attempts to halt the spread through scythes, reapers, and heavy machinery fail completely because the plant propagates rapidly from even the smallest severed cutting. Scientists, reporters, and the military become involved as the green mass swells into a massive, living hill that engulfs entire blocks and defies every standard method of destruction. Even massive incendiary bombings and military tunnels packed with high explosives only serve to scatter the fragments and accelerate the uncontrollable expansion.
As the weed consumes more territory, pushing toward the ocean and overwhelming neighboring communities, society reacts with a mixture of panic, greed, and bizarre religious fervor. The government finally establishes a massive twenty-mile-wide band of salt across the region to act as a barrier against the relentless advance. While the sheer scale of the disaster upends countless lives and forces a massive evacuation, the narrative ultimately captures humanity's stubborn resilience in the face of an unstoppable natural force.
