At the beginning of the twentieth century, a respected watchmaker named Selming is found murdered in his bed in a quiet German town. Suspicion immediately falls on his devoted twenty-year-old foster son, Herman, who fled the town abruptly before the crime was discovered. Arrested and brought back to face a hostile public, Herman maintains his innocence with remarkable composure, refusing to disclose the real reason for his journey or explain a torn letter found in his possession. Despite the glowing testimonies of neighbors regarding his good character, circumstantial evidence mounts against him, pushed further by the housekeeper's testimony about an overheard argument where Selming accused Herman of being a deceitful imposter.
