«Альфред Рассел Уоллес был известнейшим натуралистом и зоологом. Он вспышкой гениальности пришел к тем же выводам, к которым Дарвин пришел после шестнадцати лет кропотливого труда и тщательных наблюдений... Это был уникальный пример почти точного совпадения двух великих умов, работавших над одной и той же темой, хотя и в разных частях света, без сговора и без соперничества... Между Дарвином и Уоллесом добрая воля и дружба никогда не прерывались. Жизнь Уоллеса была посвящена преследованию различных объектов интеллектуального и философского интереса, на которых я не буду здесь останавливаться. Все согласятся, что уместно, чтобы его медальон был помещен рядом с медальоном Дарвина, с чьим великим именем его собственное имя навсегда останется связанным в мирах мысли и науки».
