A discharged track foreman and a band of disgruntled foreign laborers plan to run passenger train No. 20 down a washed-out siding into a river. Trapped and pursued, Alex evades capture, liberates the imprisoned foreman, and ultimately scales an old semaphore tower. Using a makeshift telegraph signal with his cap and lantern, he manages to flash a warning to the station in the nick of time, preventing a catastrophe and exposing the conspirators.
Following this heroism, Alex takes on night operator duties at Watson Siding, where a dense spring fog hides a massive landslide. Cut off from the dispatcher by weather-induced line current leakage, he improvises a crude gravity battery using a stoneware water-cooler, copper from a wash-boiler, and zinc from a stove-board. With this makeshift power source, he successfully transmits a life-saving warning to halt the oncoming mail train just before disaster strikes.
The action shifts to Haddowville, where Alex's telegraphic chum, Jack Orr, faces his own trials. When a devastating series of fires breaks out and destroys the town's station and telephone exchange, Jack rescues a charred relay and key from the burning commercial office. Improvising a key and using a basement battery, Jack taps out a desperate plea for steam fire-engines, saving the town from complete destruction and earning a position in a commercial telegraph office.
Later, Alex tackles vacation relief at Hadley Corners, where he is ambushed and tied up by armed train robbers who have severed the telegraph lines. Freeing himself, he bridges the cut by connecting the line wire to the railroad tracks, managing to warn the dispatcher and orchestrating a posse interception of the outlaws. Meanwhile, Jack uncovers a freight-theft ring at Midway Junction, cleverly exposing a thief who used a 'haunting' ruse to cover his tracks, though he is later falsely framed by the gang and forced to clear his name in court through a remarkable telegraphic identification test.
The tension escalates as the narrative builds toward a railroad construction race and impending conflict with a rival company, the K. & Z. Throughout these gripping episodes, Wilson Jennings also distinguishes himself by tackling a mine disaster at Bonepile, while Jack and Alex face raging forest fires, runaway ore cars, and washed-out bridges in a relentless test of railroad grit.
