The narrative begins in the smoking ruins of Troy, where the Greek victors prepare to sail for home. Among them is Odysseus, king of Ithaca, whose clever stratagem of the wooden horse secured the city's fall. However, by blinding Polyphemus the Cyclops, he incurs the relentless wrath of Poseidon, setting off a decade of disastrous wanderings across uncharted seas.
During his voyage, Odysseus encounters the lotus-eaters who induce sweet forgetfulness, the enchantress Circe who transforms his men into swine, and the terrifying hazards of Scylla and Charybdis. After losing all his ships and comrades as punishment for slaughtering the sacred cattle of the sun god, he washes ashore on the island of the nymph Calypso, who detains him for seven years until the gods decree his release.
With the help of Athena and the hospitable Phæacians, Odysseus finally reaches his native Ithaca, disguised as a beggar by the goddess to protect him from the lawless suitors who have overrun his palace. These arrogant men have spent years consuming his wealth and pressing his faithful queen, Penelope, for marriage, believing her husband to be dead.
In Ithaca, Odysseus reunites with his loyal son Telemachos and faithful servants. Penelope, weary of deception, proposes an impossible archery contest using her husband's old bow to choose a new husband among the suitors, promising to marry whoever can string it and shoot through twelve axe rings.
None of the suitors can even bend the bow, but the disguised beggar steps forward and effortlessly accomplishes the feat. Disclosing his true identity, Odysseus, alongside Telemachos and a few loyal men, traps the suitors inside the great hall and executes swift, bloody justice, purging his home of the parasites.
Reunited at last with Penelope after proving his identity through the secret of their immovable bed, Odysseus visits his aging father Laertes. Following a brief uprising by the families of the slain suitors, Athena intervenes to establish a lasting peace, restoring the rightful king to his throne and securing his legendary peace.
