ВВЕДЕНИЕ

Если измерять эпохи, или эры, столетними промежутками, то период, охватывающий девятнадцатый век, выделяется возвышенным и обнадеживающим контрастом по сравнению с любым предшествующим. Будучи наследником всех предыдущих столетий, он расширил и облагородил свое наследие в степени, не имеющей аналогов в истории; в то же время, благодаря присущим только ему гению и энергии, он создал оригинальное достояние для собственного пользования и для будущего, гораздо более богатое, чем любое из когда-либо зафиксированных ранее. Действительно, не позволяя существующей и простительной гордости поставить под угрозу строгую истину, можно сказать, что по многим направлениям изобретений и прогресса, которые наиболее тесно затронули жизнь и цивилизацию мира, девятнадцатый век достиг триумфов и совершил чудеса, равные, если не превосходящие все остальные века вместе взятые.

Среди столь многих и веских причин этот том находит прекрасное оправдание своему существованию.
