ПОЛИТИЧЕСКАЯ ИСТОРИЯ АНГЛИИ.
Прошло семьдесят пять лет с тех пор, как Лингард завершил свою «Историю Англии», заканчивающуюся Революцией 1688 года. За этот период историческая наука сделала большой шаг вперед. Год за годом рос массив материалов для новой Истории Англии; события и характеры освещались по-новому, а старые ошибки исправлялись. Было написано много выдающихся трудов, посвященных различным периодам нашей истории, причем некоторые из них столь объмисты, что рассчитаны почти исключительно на профессиональных историков-исследователей. Считается, что пришло время представить общественности прогресс, достигнутый в изучении английской истории в целом, в виде единого труда достаточно солидного объема. Такая книга должна опираться на самостоятельную мысль и изыскания, но в то же время быть написанной при полном знакомстве с трудами лучших современных историков и с намерением использовать их выводы везде, где они представляются обоснованными.
Огромное количество первоисточников и исследований, как печатных, так и рукописных, на которых должна основываться История Англии, если она призвана отражать современное состояние знаний, делает сотрудничество авторов практически необходимым и безусловно целесообразным. Настоящая История, частью которой является этот том, представляет собой попытку изложить в доступной форме результаты, достигнутые к настоящему времени исторической наукой. Она будет состоять из двенадцати томов, написанных двенадцатью разными авторами, каждый из которых был выбран как специалист, наиболее способный справиться с порученным ему периодом; редакторы же, предоставляя каждому автору максимальную свободу, надеются обеспечить общее сходство в методах изложения, с тем чтобы все двенадцать томов как по своему содержанию, так и по внешнему виду составляли единую Историю.
Как следует из ее названия, эта История будет в первую очередь посвящена политике, истории Англии, а после даты унии с Шотландией — Великобритании как государства или политического организма; но поскольку жизнь нации сложна и ее состояние в любой данный момент невозможно понять без учета различных действующих на нее сил, в этих томах также найдется место для освещения религиозных вопросов, а также интеллектуального, социального и экономического прогресса. Сноски будут, насколько это возможно, ограничены ссылками на авторитетные источники, и ссылки не будут добавляться к утверждениям, которые представляются общеизвестными фактами и не требуют подтверждения. Каждый том будет снабжен Приложением, содержащим краткий обзор главных первоисточников и вторичных источников, использованных автором. Этот обзор составляется с целью помочь учащимся и исследователям, а не представлять собой длинные списки книг без каких-либо примечаний об их содержании или ценности.
