«Рукописи, большинство из которых сохранилось до сих пор, написаны с предельным тщанием четким и энергичным почерком Стриндберга и часто красиво оформлены. Они отражают аккуратность и порядок, которыми окружал себя автор, а также ту любовь, с которой он выполнял свою работу. Работая над средневековой драмой, Стриндберг иллюминировал свои рукописи подобно средневековой рукописной книге — художественно оформленными и цветными инициалами, а также написанными им самим миниатюрами; все это гармонировало с эпохой и обстановкой, в которой происходило действие. На других страницах прямо в текст вплетались орнаменты, соответствующие времени и атмосфере написанного произведения. Как правило, он использовал бумагу ручной выделки Лессебо и обычно делал очень мало правок. Он практически никогда не переписывал свои рукописи начисто. В более поздние годы он редко исправлял что-либо после того, как оно было записано. Он не любил перечитывать собственные произведения после их завершения».
