Soon, the narrative expands into a web of international espionage. Major Edmond O’Shea, a distinguished British officer and legendary mess-room hero, arrives on the island. While O'Shea appears to be a typical poseur, he is actually hunting for a stolen black dispatch-box containing correspondence that could compromise a royal personage and aid a Communist conspiracy.
Parallel to O'Shea's secret mission, Nanette falls under the dangerous spell of Gabriel da Cunha, a handsome and sinister agent posing as a wealthy expatriate. Da Cunha pursues the young girl relentlessly, culminating in a daring abduction to his isolated bungalow in the hills where he attempts to force her compliance.
O'Shea, aided by Decies and the heartbroken Jack, undertakes a perilous climb up the mountain tracks to rescue Nanette. The confrontation at the cliffside bungalow exposes Da Cunha's true nature as a Red operative. O'Shea defeats Da Cunha in a swift physical clash and recovers the crucial documents, though the struggle leaves Nanette deeply shaken and conscious of the real dangers surrounding her.
Following the rescue, Nanette’s feelings shift definitively toward O’Shea, who struggles internally with his intense love for her and his sense of duty.
