In the remote pine country of central Oregon, an unexpected land boom crowds the clearing outside Dave Budd’s store with hopeful settlers and rugged prospectors. Sheriff Bart McKenzie jokingly forces a deputy’s star onto the aging, reluctant storekeeper, tasking him with keeping watch over a hot-headed red-headed man named Bill. Bill is smitten with a sturdy local girl, but their romance has recently been upended by the arrival of Sam, a tall, impeccably dressed newcomer whose poker-faced reserve and monosyllabic speech irk everyone he meets.
The fragile peace of the camp is broken at midnight when an irate citizen discovers four hundred dollars stolen from his wagon. Suspicion immediately falls on Bill, especially after a search uncovers the missing wallet in his war bag. Though Bill fiercely proclaims his innocence and insists the evidence was planted, the angry crowd is ready to lynch him on the spot. Stepping in with quiet authority, Budd takes the prisoner into custody, locking him inside the store for the night.
By morning, Bill has successfully sliced his bonds and vanished into the wilderness, prompting posses to scour the woods and roads in vain. Throughout the following day, the girl fiercely defends Bill’s character to the storekeeper, while Sam quietly slips away into the pines on a mysterious errand. Realizing the true nature of the thief, Budd devises a subtle trap, baiting his cigar-box cash till and allowing the mystery to unfold in the dark hours.
Late at night, a shadowy figure creeps into the store to rifle through the cash box once more. Caught in the act, Sam draws a weapon on the storekeeper, only to be fatally shot when Budd fires in self-defense. As the camp gathers around the body, Budd explains that he suspected the poker-faced newcomer all along and deliberately let Bill escape to expose the truth. Bill emerges from the surrounding pines, fully vindicated and ready to reconcile with the girl, bringing peace back to the crowded Oregon clearing.
