Было естественно, что философия должна закончиться здесь. Ибо философия основана на разуме. Это усилие постичь, понять, ухватить реальность вещей интеллектуально. Поэтому она не может допустить ничего выше разума. Возвысить интуицию, экстаз или восторг над мыслью — это смерть для философии. Философия, делая такое допущение, выпускает свою собственную жизненную кровь, которой является мысль. В неоплатонизме, следовательно, древняя философия совершает самоубийство. Это конец. Место философии отныне занимает религия. Христианство торжествует и сметает со своего пути всякую независимую мысль. Больше нет философии, пока новый дух исследования и удивления не будет вдохнут в человека в эпоху Возрождения и Реформации. Тогда начинается новая эра, которая дает рождение новому философскому импульсу, под влиянием которого мы все еще живем. Но чтобы достичь этой новой эры философии, человеческий дух должен был сначала пройти через бесплодные пустыни схоластики.
